Nearly two thousand people in eight counties across the state of Nevada will get free identity theft protection from the Nevada ID Theft Protection Act from now through Dec. 31.
Nevada’s expanded ID Theft Protection Act, which took effect July 1, applies to anyone in the state who has personal information on file with a financial institution, one of 16 private companies that issue prepaid debit cards, a credit card issuer, a mortgage loan servicer, or a government-issued photo ID card. Under the law, any individual who applies for credit or a loan, gets a job or a bank account, and pays utility bills must be offered, at no cost, free identity theft protection for two years.
To qualify, consumers must have lived in the state for at least 60 days, must be age 18 or older, and must be a Nevada resident. It’s also possible to get the identity protection in a neighboring state, but not in states that don’t have the law on the books.

The ID Theft Protection Act was passed in July 2010 and named several organizations that are required to offer the services. The NIA will provide the monitoring service for the two-year period for any of those organizations.
During the first year of the ID Theft Protection Act, nearly 20,000 people in Nevada were enrolled in the program. Of those, nearly 19,000 people successfully enrolled in the monitoring service and nearly 1,000 people experienced a fraud attempt or identity theft. As of July 1, 2011, nearly 2,000 people were enrolled.
“The NIA is excited about this new service and the number of Nevadans who can now receive identity theft protection for free,” said John Baril, president of the NIA. “The NIA is always looking for ways to make ID theft protection more convenient for consumers and the NIA is happy to provide this service to Nevada consumers.”
Nevada’s ID Theft Protection Act is the first law of its kind in the country. The law was passed in July 2010.
